Richard Jewell (2020) - Reap What You Sow!
★★★☆☆
Clint Eastwood's films have never been a disappointment, yet you
never feel so excited about them. Most of them are not bad, like 'The Mule',
'American Sniper', 'Sully', 'Hereafter'. Some are actually more than good, like
'Gran Torino', 'Million Dollar Baby'. It seems that he's always intended to
tell the story the way he wanted, not the way you want or expect. Some could be
let down in such a sense, but it's never happened to me since I had no
expectations for his films. Turns out it's the best way to appreciate them, or
anything else indeed.
'Richard Jewell', too, belongs to the 'not bad' category among Clint
Eastwood's films. And again, it's based on a true event where a security guy is
seen from a hero who discovers the bomb and saves a lot more from being killed,
to a bomber hero who actually plants the bomb himself to make up a good story
to want to deceive and gain fame and fortune by the way. Thanks to the
comparatively fair and healthy legal system of the U.S., Richard Jewell is
finally able to clear his name with help of a very competent lawyer that is
also a very good friend of his afterwards. The film seems calm and steady from
start to finish. There's never a moment too stirring or emotional yet it never
loses my attention. As a director, Clint Eastwood's really got a way with filmmaking
and storytelling at such an age still. He's almost 90 years old!
You always reap what you sow! That's how Karma works! An apple seed
never grows bananas. It only bears apples that you may or may not like,
according to the conditions you offer, knowingly or unknowingly, during its
growth. A bomber can never be a hero. A hero will never be a bomber. A bomber
hero is just a joke or a misconception that you may not reap what you sow. It's
karma that Richard Jewell discovers the bomb. It's karma that he's later on
accused as a bomber hero! It's also karma that he's lucky enough to be in the
right country and have the right attorney to help defend his innocence!
