Django Unchained (2012) - Who Is Dr. King? I'd Like To Know Instead.

★★★★☆

I wonder, who Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) is; how a doctor, or say, a dentist-turned-bounty hunter pops up out of nowhere in the middle of the night, sets Django (Jamie Foxx) free, and sets out to hunt bastards; why he wants to risk his own life to help Django fulfill his presumably ridiculous wish; why he believes that a nigger’s right to be on a horse while everybody else thinks that’s absolutely unacceptable; how he could be that fearless, determined, helpful, and loving kind in a sense. Well…

‘Django Unchained’, Quentin Tarantino’s latest, is as awesome, exhilarating and engrossing as his previous ‘Inglorious Basterds’. In the film, he shows off his ingenious directorial skills in terms of witty, zaggy dialogues, appropriate castings, a great setup for the final painful and explosive, and you know what, nothing’s more entertaining than the music Tarantino chose for the film. Slavery is but a backdrop, and in front it a story of a set-free nigger struggling to rescue his enslaved wife plays out almost joyfully and unmistakably. And the villains, Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his lackey, Stephen (Samuel L. Jackson) are… such a phenomenon! That’s all I can say. This film really is a must-see, and shouldn’t be a miss!

Some are not quite fond of QT’s films of violence. As a matter of fact, they’re not so violent as most of the cult films feature after all. I guess it’s all emotionally necessary and technically decent to get you engaged. It doesn’t exceed to a point where you’d feel terribly nauseous and turn away. Violence nonetheless, is so inevitable in a story of vengeance like ‘Django Unchained’. One of the bloody scenes that strikes me is where two big niggers are forced to fight the hell out of each other while being enjoyed by white men around. I don’t feel like it’s exaggerated any a bit. I believe it’s true that black people were not only treated like white men’s properties, slaves, but also something even cheaper than animals. How pathetic and inglorious a history that is to the Americans.

So who is Dr. King Schultz exactly? Not really explained though. All we know is he’s a German. He used to be a dentist, but is now a proficient bounty hunter that hunts down criminals, dead or alive, for rewards. Right, if he’s a saint like a Boddhisattva or stuff here to teach and preach, he shouldn’t have killed anyway. But I guess in a crazy time like that, killing seems to be the only way to wake up the insane and set free the chained!

PS: 1, the scene after the end credits is nothing vital but to raise a question, if you’re curious. 2, Attention! Quentin Tarantino is in the film again as a cameo.
