Splice - This Is Not A Good Idea.

 (2009) ★☆☆☆☆

First off, let me explain the word (I did have to look it up in a dictionary), splice, which means to join more than two pieces together so as to form one long piece. So if you're a splicing master, you basically splice more than two pieces of DNA to create something new. Meaning you're in a role of God. If you feel happy about that, you have no idea how you're going to suffer.

'Splice' is about two genetic engineers played by Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley thinking that it'd benefit the entire human race medically if having a chance to experiment on a hybrid that contains human DNA, and in the end having to face the consequences. The message is straight: playing God is absolutely not a good idea. The price is much bigger than you can ever imagine.

I have no problem with the story itself, though it's such a cliche. What upsets me is the way it presents. It seems like things are in a rush to what they're supposed to be like in a cheap scary movie instead of a psychological thriller. They all tend to go naturally without any struggles, sensations or suspense. Those so-called twists are in a sense like a poison to make it look even worse. Adrien Brody, his role as 'The Pianist' back in 2002 did impress me much, is such a waste in the film. He doesn't seem to bear any charm or wits to convince me that he's a scientist wrestling with his conscience and moral consciousness. He's nothing but a man of lust in his role, an inconceivably mindless fool.

It could've been thought-provoking. It could've been psychologically thrilling. It could've been romantically poignant and heart-wrenching. It's, however, not what I thought it was. It doesn't strikes. It only sickens.
