Barton Fink - Not That Right
Okay, the Hotel Earle's like hell. Charlie Meadows is the devil or monster. So what? Emphasizing number 'six' three times means...you know... and the attendants are devil's lackeys. So what? The wresting scene between Barton and Charlie is actually a sex scene. So they do have 'some sick sex thing' in the film. So what? Barton's struggle to write a great story for Capitol Pictures is actually the struggle with his sexual orientation. So what? Barton's blocked up. So were Coen Brothers while working on Miller's Crossing. So what?
It did give me a wakeup in the middle as I was almost zonked out by the first half that seems pretty quiet and normal though. Barton Fink (John Turturro) is a successful and respected writer. He's invited to move to New York to write scripts for pictures. He checks in the Hotel Earle where he gets to meet Charlie Meadows (John Goodman). They hit it off and seem to enjoy each other's company. But later, when Barton asks Audrey Taylor (Judy Davis), the novelist W. P. Mayhem's secretary, to come to his room to help him with the script, things start to go terribly, strangely wrong. And as you may go like 'the first boring half is finally over. Here we go for the twisty, exciting second half. Yeah! What a great crime thriller it's gonna be!', it turns into something like one of the Stephen King's novels.
Maybe I'm too stupid to be able to appreciate it. Or maybe it's simply not that good as I thought. Anyway I guess not every Coen Brothers' film is classic and worth checking out. No doubt half of their films is, but I just happened to check out one of the other half.
