The Book Of Eli - Do We Really Need It?

 (2010) ★★★☆☆

Religion is kinda important to us, not only because it'd comfort us about death, we also need it to rule, to justify, and to kill. So at times, religion could be a dangerous thing coz it'd make us lose sensibility and do something totally ridiculous. This is a film about the faith in God, or more precisely, the use of God. In an apocalyptic world like that, God's absolutely useful!

Eli (Danzel Washington) is heading west to where he thinks is the most appropriate place to rest the Book he's been carrying. During his journey, he runs into an ambitious man (Gary Oldman) who dreams of building more towns and becoming a king or something. But what he seems to lack is the right words to rule. And he's been searching for the Book in which those right words of wisdom and morality can be found. The Book has a cross-shaped sign on its cover, so what do you think it is? Bad news for him though, coz Eli won't stop for anything or anybody till he reaches his destination. He's strong and trained. He's determined to get his job done. He believes that it's the only way to make people not to lose hope for the future and put the world back in order again. So he must not fail!

The ending did give me a surprise, but I'd rather throw in a WTH instead of an OMG. I felt like I was sorta fooled, but not pissed after all, coz it made me realize how the concept of God works in our heart. We created God coz there's something we can't understand or explain. But have you ever thought that it's not that there's something incomprehensible, it's just that we're not wise enough to comprehend? If we are, what do we need God for? God would be simply unnecessary if you could think without using your language. The problem is, could you?
