The Descent - What A Letdown!

(2005's The Descent) ★★★☆☆

As a pure horror, 'The Descent' does impress me in a way by spending 1/3 part of the film introducing those 6 women before they descend into a dark, mad, dangerous underworld, where they encounter not only their painful past and shadow, but also something weird and fierce. The build-up is good. Unlike other horrors that always seem to rush us to whatever the scary thing is, it doesn't. The set-up is also breath taking. Image you're in a world where light's your life, and you're up against something that doesn't need light to hunt, OMG!
It does remind me of another horror classic, 1979's 'Alien'. But the differences are: a) things in 'The Descent' are not creatively scary or physically gross enough; b) they don't seem to have lethal attacks; c) they can be killed quite easily as you may not believe it; d) 'they' are a problem, I think 'it' will be much better.

It's not a classic though I thought it was in the beginning. I was turned down in the middle, and got pissed off in the end. The open ending gives you a hint that there could be part 2 to be continued. You bet!

 (2009's The Descent Part 2) ★☆☆☆☆

Here it is, 'The Descent: Part 2'. Silly huh? Yeah, I'm even silly to check it out. This time, no build-up, no patience, no thrills, no suspense, just get down there to kill and be killed, nothing but blood, lots of blood, that's what makes it trash, a waste of time and money. Again, the ending suggests there would be part 3, 4, 5...coming! It's going to be like another Saw series. Okay, enough, just give me a break here.
